Counter Cafe serves up comfort

Visitors to Austin can really work up an appetite while seeing the sights. When it’s time for a break, the Counter Cafe is serving up comfort food for breakfast and lunch.

The chicken burger with a side of sweet potato fries was featured on Food Network’s “Triple D” (“Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”) and Texas Monthly Magazine in 2009. The burger was outstanding. The chicken patty contained chopped onions, crushed red pepper, jalapenos and a curry seasoning to create a spicy flavor. The patty was served on a whole-wheat bun along with sweet potato fries served as a substitute. The price was $12 with a $1 surcharge for the sweet potato fries.

The diner also serves grilled quail, sandwiches, breakfast tacos and other delights. Breakfast is served all day and they’re not open for dinner. Check out the Counter Cafe from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. There are two locations in Austin; the original at 626 N. Lamar Blvd. and the East Cafe at 1914 E. 6th St.
