On Tuesday, Sept. 20, two vocal jazz groups from the University of North Texas will visit Richland to hold a free recital as a part of this semester’s Fall 2016 Recital Series. The performance by the UNT Jazz Singers and the Avenue C vocal group will take place at 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Fannin Performance Hall.
Both the UNT Jazz Singers and Avenue C are ensembles within the Division of Jazz Music at UNT’s College of Music, and have received much recognition. The UNT Jazz Singers is the top vocal group among the vocal ensembles UNT offers through its Jazz Studies Division, and were awarded “Outstanding Performance” in the 2012 DownBeat Student Music Awards as a Graduate-level Jazz Choir. The ensemble has also received the title of the Collegiate Jazz Choir winner many times.
Under the direction of Jennifer Barnes, the UNT Jazz Singers is an ensemble of twelve to fifteen vocalists and a four-piece rhythm section. The UNT Jazz Singers tout an impressive skill set, including emphasis on “close vocal harmonies, cutting-edge repertoire and improvisation.” We are promised an advanced, spectacular performance of a collection of jazz music. Avenue C, directed by the Graduate Teaching Fellows at UNT, offer their vocal stylings as well for a complete vocal jazz experience.
